Charlie's corner

  Charlie

Updates

So here we are again. Two weeks seems like an afternoon nowadays. Where does the time go?

Since we last met, things have been picking up. Auditions left and right, and life seems kinda right. Imagine this...

Intern at the management company for 3 days...AND

Slave away at the restaurant for another 4 days...AND

Perform in a play 3 days...AND

The rest of the 4 afternoons you have left gets taken up by auditions and meetings... what do you have left?

All work and no play makes Charlie a sad boy. I can't complain. Rather be busy than sitting at home watching T.V., eating ice cream and picking my nose.

There's nothing wrong with picking your nose.

Big Mouth?

In Hollywood, being Asian makes you a minority. That statement is also true in most of America. Being that, I always try to help out fellow Asians, male or female.

My goal is to form an Asian posse like the Rat Pack. We would call ourselves the S.A.M (Single Asian Males). We could rule Hollywood like the Rat Pack ruled Hollywood back in the day. Anyways, that's another story for another time ... back to my point...

When I meet fellow Asian actors, writers, whatever, I try to inquire about their careers and see if we can help each other out. Note: the only Asians I'm meeting are either actors or cooks. No idea why. At first, most of them are receptive to my interest but after a few minutes, they get this glazed look in their eyes like I'm trying to sell them soap or something.

I tell them about how I've managed to get a manager and auditions and callbacks. They listen and nod and smile and don't really care. Are they jealous? Am I talking too much? All I want to do is help.

"All you have to do is the same things that I've done", I shout out. Do they listen? Who knows? Some do keep in touch and write here and there but most stay in their own little world.

Another thing about Asians in America... you are either F.O.Bs (Fresh Off Boat) or A.B.Cs (American Born Chinese). FOBs get no respect; toil all day in the restaurants and dream of going back to the homeland. ABCs think they're white, hates the FOBs, and try to marry into the white race. Both groups still looked upon as yellow and get no respect from Hollywood.

In fact, Hollywood only produces FOB roles for Asians. I have no idea where I'm going with this: either way both FOBs and ABCs are getting F#*K!

How about the Asians that was born in Asian but moved to America at a very early age, are they FOBs or ABCs?

How's this for a mind F#*K. Imagine having a mind and heart of someone raised in America but looking Asian. Some people call them bananas (White on the inside and Yellow on the outside). They think they're white but they look Asian. So what are they?

The FOBs and homeland Asians won't accept them, while Americans will always see them as Asians. So where do they belong? Where do I belong?
