Who are you?
That's what I would ask. Who the heck are you? Where do you come off starting a revolution? What about Jackie Chan,
Bruce Lee, Chow Yun Fat and Ang Lee? They've been in the film business for years and paved your way. You are so right.
I am very thankful and grateful for all the great Asian actors, writers, and directors before me; without them my journey would be fruitless.
I am Charlie Cheng. No relation to the fictional character in the 1930s series "Charlie Chan" or Jackie Chan. I am on a quest; a
mission to bring the yellow faces of Asia into America's theatres and TVs. This is a personal revolution.
You turn on the tube and the least represented minority on television is Asian males. Go to the cinema and the numbers are even worst.
When you do catch a glimpse of a yellow face, it's attached to a waiter, dishwasher, cook or Kung Fu master. So Americans think we can
clean, cook and fight. Well we have that going for us.
Credentials
I have a degree in Film (with an emphasis on directing) from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco and also majored in
English for four years at Eastern CT State University. I've written two plays, three screenplays and studied acting at three schools
over 5 years with six teachers.
All of which means very little if you're not young and beautiful. I am not beautiful, but still young looking. In Hollywood, besides
hard work, talent and luck, you need to be blonde with blue eyes and drop dead gorgeous.
Pray for me.
How long will this revolution take, I'm hungry?
"As long as it takes" Napoleon once screamed, in French, I think. Who are am I kidding? I'm up for a good revolution as much as
the next guy but there comes a time when you feel the need to settle down with a woman and make babies.
No?
Ten years. The Revolution will last ten years. No more and no less. Any more would be pathetic and any less would be a shame.
"You've got to have goals, Son!" You've heard that before. What your Dad should've of said was you need to have a plan with that goal. A…
Ten Year Plan
For every year that I'll be in L.A., there's a goal to reach. The final goal is to produce a movie with a minority cast and crew. The
five year goal is to open that production company to produce that movie.
The first goal is to get an acting/writing agent. To accomplish that goal, you have to be in Los Angeles. On Tuesday
October 15, 2002, the journey of 2907.18 miles from Norwich, Connecticut to Los Angeles, California will begin.
So join me as I pour my heart out to you about the ups and downs of trying to reach the moon.
Impossible?
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you
didn't do than by the ones you did do.... Explore. Dream. Discover."
